Dunedin’s Big Green Challenge for 2017!


 

We will be accepting applications up till 6 May in recognition that the closing date falling in school holidays may have made the challenge date tricky for some.

Sustainable Dunedin City members are pleased to announce the launch of this year’s Big Green Challenge. We’re on the lookout for exciting projects and creative initiatives that will strengthen Dunedin’s community resilience and foster stronger sustainability principles – great ideas that can be put into practice, and which will inspire others to participate in building resilient local communities. Projects might be in the fields of food production and distribution, ecological restoration, water, waste, transport, energy, community building or any other areas that support the vibrancy of our wonderful small city and its future.

We are offering ten grants of up to $500 each to groups and to individuals.

These grants are available to implement projects within the greater Dunedin area (within the D.C.C boundaries of Waikouaiti in the north, to Brighton in the south, and to Middlemarch in the west).

Applications are now open and will close on 6 May 2017.

Successful applicants will be advised and funded by mid-May.
Projects are to be completed by the end of October 2017.
You’ll be asked to send in regular updates of how your project is going to the BGC co-ordinator at bgc@sustainabledunedincity.org.nz
We encourage our participants to join our Facebook page “Dunedin’s Big Green Challenge” and to contribute photos, clips and news of their project as it develops.
A closing event to showcase all our projects will be held late November 2017. All participants are invited to attend this celebratory event, where a representative from each project will give a brief presentation on their work and achievements.

Applications require the following

1.  Your name, the name of your group and a brief description of the activities you/your group are involved in.

2.  Your contact details – include email address, phone number and postal address.

3.   An explanation of how your project will contribute to the resilience and sustainability of your local community and/or the greater Dunedin area.

4.   A description of your project’s implementation and its expected timeline. (We need the “who/when/where and how” details).

5.   A budget, outlining your expected costs. (If there are additional costs, please explain how you intend funding this part of your project).

6.  A statement that you agree to complete your project by the end of 31st October at the latest.

7.  A  statement that you agree to have information about your project posted on the Sustainable Dunedin City website.

8.  An acknowledgement that a representative/s will attend the closing event and give a short presentation on what your project has achieved.

9.   If a successful applicant/group would like a mentor, please state this clearly on your application letter and we’ll endeavour to connect you up with an appropriately skilled person.

Projects which received funding in Dunedin‘s previous Big Green Challenge were:

* Caroline Davies & Daniel Buchanan
– Plan B: Bee Nurturing (establishing hives and sharing nuclei to for pollination)

* Corstorphine Community Hub
– towards establishing Corstorphine Community Garden (tools and resources for creating 4 x raised beds)

* Generation Zero
– for workshops in 2015 to attract & retain students active on climate change issues

* Grubby Angels (Southern DIvision)
– to establish a Southern Dunedin Garden Network (set up vegetable gardens for 5 x local households)

* Karitane Krew
– to purchase a water tank for the Karitane School gardens

* NEVEY (North East Valley Enterprising Youth Collective)
– for materials for OSCAR children to create a scale model and for youth to build a prototype for waste management on local land

* Ocean Grove Community Trust
– towards the establishment of the Ocean Grove Community Garden (soil testing, water installation, rental & fencing)

* QUACK (Queen’s High School envirogroup)
– for further development of the school garden

* Volunteering Otago
– towards preserving and baking workshops in the free School Holiday programmes in 2015

* Wakari School Garden Group
– for purchase of a shed to store tools for the school garden
