i) SDC Submission on the Emission Trading Scheme Review

Thanks very much everyone for your input! Phil is finalising the submission on the basis of everyone’s suggestions and feedback. We will circulate the finalised version with the next newsletter.

2. Upcoming Dunedin Sustainability Events and Courses

Another good calendar for sustainability-related events around Dunedin can be found at http://dect.org.nz/modules/extcal/calendar.php. We’d love to advertise your sustainability-related event or course - please send contributions in to dk.sk@xtra.co.nz.

i) Heartbeat: an art exhibition exploring sustainability (from THIS Thursday 5 February)

The exhibition’s works include reclaimed materials, hand ground pigments, low toxic printmaking and a celebration of tea.Venue: Dunedin Community Gallery, February 5 - February 15, 11am - 6pm
Artists include: Brian Wood, Cory Hughes, Julia Robertson, Max Bellamy, Sarah McKay, Kat Taiaroa, Petra Fersterer, Katie Whitefield, Emily Robertson and Rueben McKay.
Workshops will be running on Waitangi Day, February 6. Visitors can get a taste of screenprinting (cost $5), Elizabeth Marshall will offer visitors the opportunity to create a silver heart brooch from 2pm ($25, inquiries to whimsicalwire@hotmail.com), and free workshop running from 11am - 2pm will look at origami and woven hearts.

ii) Cob workshops - THIS Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 February, register now

All you need to know how to start your own cob building is $120. Workshops are running 9-5pm, February 7th and 8th, Harmony Farm, 239 Waitati Valley Rd.

All materials provided. Bring food to keep your energy up, and to share for lunch. Walk barefoot in the weeks before this workshop to toughen up the soles of your feet!

iii) Sustainable Living Classes - starting NEXT Tuesday 10 February and Wednesday 11 February, register now

This interactive adult community education eight-week course will assist you to - a. Learn and share practical tips that make a difference and can save you money b. Meet others in your community who are interested in living more sustainably c. Gain support for introducing lifestyle changes you want to make Facilitated by Dr Maureen Howard, c/o Water and Waste Services, Dunedin City Council. Course Content Week 1: Introduction - Sustainability in the home. Personal action. Week 2: Energy - Powering Down: Minimising loss. Heating. Renewables Week 3: Waste - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Composting methods Week 4: Shopping - Consumer choices. Make your own cleaners Week 5: Sustainable Backyards - Gardening, Attracting wildlife, Keeping Chooks. Week 6: Water - Collecting, Conserving, Keeping waterways clean Week 7: Transport - Treading lightly on the planet Week 8: Final - Community Focus and Action Upcoming courses RAVENSBOURNE - Daytime Course (8 Weeks) Start Date: Tuesday 10 February Each Tuesday: 10.30am-12.30pm Venue: Renaissance Gallery MACANDREW BAY - Evening Course (8 Weeks) Start Date: Tuesday 10 February Each Tuesday: 7-9pm Venue: MacAndrew Bay Primary School MOSGIEL - Daytime Course (8 Weeks) Start Date: Wed 11 February Each Wednesday: 10.15am-12.15pm Venue: Mosgiel Library KAIKORAI VALLEY - Evening Course (8 Weeks) Start Date: Wed 11 February Each Wednesday: 7-9pm Venue: Kaikorai Valley College (register with school) Enrollment and costs All courses are free but a Koha/Donation is requested ($25-35 recommended) Courses are restricted to a maximum of 14 people. TRANSITION VALLEY GROUP MEETING: 7 pm, Thursday, 12^th February, North East Valley Baptist Church Hall. Is Our Community Resilent Enough to Stand Up to Energy, Climate and Economic Shocks? First in a series of talks, films & discussions that will lead on to practical projects. Transition Valley is a group of locals who are keen to build skills within the communities of North East Valley, Opoho, Dalmore, Pine Hill, Normanby and Mt Mera in response to the challenges of the future.
